In this 90-minute session at Winchester Community Music School, oboe faculty member Kyoko Hida-Battaglia will work with students on sight-reading technique. We will practice sight-reading rhythm patterns without instruments, and then work on reading examples similar to those you might encounter in a live audition.

All woodwind and brass students from sixth grade through adult are welcome.

Free for WCMS students; $10 for general public; advance registration required.

• Oct. 26: Guitar Workshop: Playing Over Chord Changes, 3 p.m.

Have you wanted to improve your ability to play solos quickly and smoothly on the guitar? This 90-minute session at Winchester Community Music School, guitar faculty member Aiden Schnell will teach participants the basics of playing over simple chord changes using chord shapes and the pentatonic scale.

Open to all guitar players ages 12+ with at least three years of lessons.

Free for WCMS students; $15 for the general public; advance registration required.

• Nov. 3: Faculty Concert: “Let’s Make Arrangements,” 3 p.m.

Please join us for the first Faculty Concert of 2024-2025 featuring the Sempervirens Ensemble at Winchester Community Music School.

Four virtuoso recorder players (Heloise Degrugillier, Dan Meyers, Emily O’Brien, and Roy Sansom) will present a program which comprises music from the 14th century to this year. Works will include Baroque keyboard pieces, a medieval Estampie, one of Ligiti’s Bagatelles for Wind Quintet, the scherzo from Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a short piano prelude by Prokofiev, and more.

The members of the ensemble felt they simply had to create arrangements to play these compelling pieces.

Free admission; the program will be held in-person at WCMS and also streamed live on the YouTube and Facebook pages.
