Karen Maruyama Bolognese will remain the Winchester School Committee chair for at least one more year.

In light of the recent town election on March 22, the School Committee had a quick reorganization session last week with Superintendent Dr. Frank Hackett playing the role of chair.

“The process after the election, the policy calls for the School Committee to reorganize,” he said. “So technically, we do not currently have a chair, vice chair or secretary, so I get to play this role for just a few minutes.”

Committee member Michelle Bergstrom said the committee’s past practice has included waiting until after Town Meeting to reorganize, but when she made that motion with the goal of keeping Bolognese on as chair, it failed to receive a second.

Instead, Tom Hopcroft made a motion to keep Bolognese on as chair for the next year. It passed unanimously.

“Thank you so much and I’m happy to serve again,” said Bolognese, who was actually attending the meeting remotely. “There’s very important work that lies ahead of us on a number of fronts and I think it’s important to stay focused and full steam ahead for all of us for this year.”

Bolognese also took a moment to welcome newly elected Stefanie Mnayarji and to thank outgoing member Chris Nixon “who served for, gosh, 15 years.”

Hopcroft also nominated Tim Matthews for vice chair and that motion was also approved unanimously. Matthews in turn nominated Mnayarji for recording secretary.

“We’re putting you right to work,” Bolognese said with a laugh.

“I’m sending the minutes right over,” Hackett quipped.

Mnayarji said she was ready for the job, joking she had cleared out her basement for all the documentation to come.
