When High School Junior Jacob Lieberman was stuck at home during COVID, he enjoyed baking with his mother.
“It was a new thing for me,” he says. “We’d bake something different every day.”

Five years later, he and his twin sister Mason and their friend Rachel Dunlap had a brainstorm and started a baking club.
“We wanted to give back to the community,” he explains.
And their Bake It Forward Club was born.

The High School cooking room has five kitchens, he explains. He invited other students to sign up and the first time about 12 joined.
“We made gingerbread muffins and ended up with 60 muffins. Our advisor Mr. Casey helped us get the group started in September,” he says.
The group donates half the baked goods to a local business or charity, in one instance to the Westside Fire Station firefighters.
“We’ve also given baked goods to the Winchester Police, the Jenks Center or to EN KA,” he says. “During February school vacation, we raised $250 for charity.”
Charities include groups affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.

“My mom’s favorites are anything chocolate — I make her different kinds of chocolate cake including chocolate butterscotch,” says Jacob. “I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate; I prefer fruity flavors.
“I’m trying out a new recipe for chocolate chip cookies using brown butter,” he adds. “It gives the cookies a whole other taste!”
The Thornberry Road resident is also into Tai Kwon Do, soccer, track and wrestling. He plans to become a professional pastry chef, and his favorite school subject is chemistry, which no doubt helps with his recipes.
