The 2025 Pan-Mass Challenge is only days away. Set for the weekend of Aug. 2, the two-day event will once again attract thousands of cyclists to raise money for cancer research and patient care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The goal this year is to earn a record $76 million in donations. Last year, the riders’ donors contributed $75 million to the cause, which was also a record.
The nation’s single most successful athletic fundraising event is in its 46th year. Throughout those five decades, it has collected over $1 billion, all going directly to Dana-Farber for cancer research and patient care.
More than 6,800 riders have signed up this year, and 53 of them hail from Winchester. They will be riding on several different courses, totaling 186 miles throughout the Commonwealth.
Besides the cyclists, there are also hundreds of volunteers along the route helping out, including Winchester’s very own Allan Eyden, who also rode in it back in 1985 on the only route available at that time – Sturbridge to Provincetown.
He began his PMC volunteering efforts in 1987, and was eventually elevated to Volunteer Head Staff member in 1993 as the Road Coordinator.
“Our organization has grown a lot since (1987),” said Eyden. “We have 15 paid employees and 15 on the Head Staff, who, like me, are volunteers in their positions.
“A summary of my job is to be responsible for our 6,000 riders, and the time they spend on the road that’s not at a hub site or water stop,” Eyden added. “I also interact with 44 towns, the State Police, National Park Service and Army Corps of Engineers. Together, we map out routes, react to construction projects on them, and arrange, where appropriate, support for public safety. In addition, I assemble and manage a fleet of about 30 support vehicles that have bike mechanics and medical support volunteers on them to assist the riders during the event.”
This is Eyden’s 40th year with the PMC, and his motivation, like so many others, comes from the loss of friends to cancer.
“My mantra is simple: ‘I’m not a doctor or a scientist, so my contribution is to raise funds to support them,’” he said. “I lost a good friend to cancer just two months ago, so I participate in her honor this year.”

If you want to donate in Eyden’s name for all of his hard work to the PMC over the years, you may do so on the site’s participant link at https://profile.pmc.org/AE0002.
And here’s the long list of the 53 Winchester riders, who are ready to embark on their long journey to fight cancer complete with their links for those who would also like to donate specifically to them:
