The following was submitted by the Winchester Coalition for a Safer Community:
The Winchester Coalition for a Safer Community invites the community to attend two upcoming events for Recovery Month (September).
Sept. 18: Please join the Coalition this Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Griffin Museum for a panel discussion with two pain and substance use physicians from Newton-Wellesley Hospital: Dr. Antje Barreveld and Dr. Catharina Armstrong, as well as representatives from the Clay Soper Memorial Fund.
Fentanyl can show up anywhere, from counterfeit street pills to fentanyl-laced cannabis gummies, from college campuses to small towns like Winchester. It is critical to understand the risks in order to stay safe.
On that same evening, the Coalition will also show a screening of the new release of “If They Had Known,” which shares the tragic stories of Clay and Drew, two young men who lost their lives due to prescription drug misuse.
At 19, Clay died from mixing prescription drugs with alcohol at a party, while Drew lost his life at 23 after unknowingly taking counterfeit Xanax he purchased online to help manage his anxiety.
Two stories, two deaths....neither should have happened.
Sept. 30: On Sept. 30 at 6 p.m., a vigil for recovery and remembrance will be held at the Town Common. The vigil is the first of its kind to be held in Winchester and the Coalition welcomes those from the community and beyond to gather.
