Indivisible Winchester will host its second No Kings Day event on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in front of Winchester Unitarian Society, 478 Main St., Winchester.

The event is part of a national pro-democracy movement pushing back against authoritarian threats to democratic values.

Organizers estimate that more than 5 million people participated in the June No Kings protests across at least 2,100 communities in the U.S. and abroad. The peaceful demonstrations were among the largest single-day protests in U.S. history.

Winchester’s No Kings Day drew a crowd of over 400 residents of Winchester and nearby towns, one of the largest community demonstrations in recent memory. Participants gathered to affirm that democracy belongs to the people — not to one ruler or one party — and to send a powerful message of resistance against the erosion of democratic norms under the current administration.

“We were inspired by the energy and commitment of our neighbors who turned out in June,” said Kim Whittaker, treasurer of Indivisible Winchester. “On Oct. 18, we’ll gather again — louder, prouder, and determined to show that residents of Winchester and beyond believe our democracy is under threat and we are committed to protecting our norms and institutions.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring homemade signs, flags, noisemakers, T-shirts, and hats to make their voices heard in a peaceful, spirited protest.

The event is family-friendly and open to all who believe in safeguarding democracy.

No Kings Day is a nationwide initiative in conjunction with several pro-democracy groups. Registration is not required, but encouraged HERE. Events are expected in thousands of communities across the country. The movement draws its name from the founding principle that America was established without kings or rulers above the people.
