Winchester High School junior Amalie Thiery is a true citizen of the world.
Raised in France and Romania, she and her family moved to Winchester in August. And now she helps train folks around the globe in environmental education.
“I’ve always been passionate and concerned about global warming,” she says. “My dad is really into climate change and he facilitates groups in discussing it.”
As did Thiery. She recently facilitated a workshop through an international organization called Climate Fresk.
The workshop was on Zoom and she talked with 20 residents of Guinea, a country in East Africa.
“Seven of them work in environmental education, which is a new idea in Guinea,” she explains. “They’ll be training others. I guided the workshop using cards in a sort of game.”
Participants place the cards and each talks about their reaction to the various issues, such as environmental degradation, deforestation, or global emissions.

When asked why she decided to do this work, Thiery says, “I can’t take action on an international level, but this is an accessible tool which even a high school student can use. I observed one in June after taking a workshop in how to run a session.
“The session sums up what people should know,” she says. “And it’s a fun workshop, a cool way to meet people and learn new things. I might go into this field.”
