It’s not exactly a new location for this particular EV charger. There was already a unit on Laraway Road, but with all the construction from the upgrade to the Winchester Center MBTA, it fell into disuse.

Winchester Sustainability Director Ken Pruitt said when the station was re-opened July 16, he went out to check the EV charger.

“Lo and behold, it was non-operable,” Pruitt said, of the unit. “It had been down for two years because of all that construction.”

Pruitt called out the Engineering Department and asked if there was a way to save the unit. But that was a no go.

Pruitt said the touchscreen display had degraded to the point where it was unreadable.

“That’s when I began the process to purchase and install a new station,” Pruitt said.

The cost was $5,308.

Pruit said the new dual-port (two plugs) EV charger was installed by town engineers and should be operational by Dec. 5.

He said the Laraway Road unit is a Level 2 charger like those at Winchester High School and behind Town Hall. It is not a fast charger like the two in the Jenks Center lot.
