When participants in Bridging Independent Living Together (BILT)’s popular MBTA Adventures board a train to explore Greater Boston, they’re doing much more than taking a day trip. They’re learning to navigate public transportation, solve problems independently, build confidence, and connect with the communities around them.

For several Winchester residents and more than 150 individuals across Massachusetts, these experiences are just one example of how BILT empowers people with disabilities to live fuller, more independent lives.

Based in neighboring Woburn, BILT is a nonprofit organization providing personalized support for children, teens, and adults with disabilities.

The organization serves families throughout Winchester and surrounding communities with a multidisciplinary team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), educators, direct support professionals, and experienced disability service professionals who work together to create individualized plans centered around each person's strengths, interests, and goals.

For many families, BILT becomes an important partner during the transition from school-based services to adulthood, providing individualized support that continues long after traditional educational programs end. Whether someone is learning to cook, developing communication skills through ABA therapy, volunteering in the community, or navigating Boston on the MBTA, every experience is designed to promote confidence, independence, and belonging.

“We believe every individual deserves the opportunity to make their own choices, pursue their interests, and be an active member of their community," said Christina Gravina, founder & CEO. “Everything we do is centered around helping people build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections.”

BILT offers a comprehensive range of services, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, behavioral supports, home and community supports, respite services, family navigation, and educational workshops for families and professionals. At its Innovation Center and throughout the community, participants also enjoy social, recreational, and life skills programming including cooking, fitness, STEM, art, volunteer opportunities, and independent living classes.

One of BILT’s most popular events is its MBTA Adventures. Participants travel throughout Greater Boston using buses, trains, and subways to visit museums, sporting events, parks, restaurants, and other local destinations. Along the way, they practice reading transit maps, purchasing fares, budgeting, planning routes, and navigating unfamiliar environments — real-world skills that foster greater independence while helping individuals become more connected to the communities around them.

BILT’s commitment to quality has earned recognition throughout Massachusetts. The organization has received multiple community awards, including being named a Boston Family Favorites winner for both Best Special Needs General Resources and Best Special Needs Recreation Program.

BILT is also accredited by the Behavioral Health Center of Excellence (BHCOE), reflecting its commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based services and continuous improvement.

As BILT continues to grow, the organization hopes more Winchester families become aware of the services available just minutes away. BILT also welcomes partnerships with local businesses, schools, civic organizations, and volunteers who share its commitment to creating a more inclusive community for people of all abilities.

Families interested in learning more about BILT’s services, or community members interested in volunteering, partnering with the organization, or supporting its mission, are encouraged to visit www.biltne.org or contact info@biltne.org.
