A SPOOKY Books & Brews Bookfair @ Medford Brewing Company

Calling all beer and book lovers: it’s time to celebrate October properly with a spooky-themed book fair featuring local authors.

A SPOOKY Books & Brews Bookfair @ Medford Brewing Company, 30 Harvard Ave., Medford, will take place on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.

Authors Gillian Daniels (“Jenny Will Eat You Now”) and Lyndsay Ely (“The Lost Reliquary”) will be signing throughout the afternoon. The Book Ends team will also have a selection of books and bookish gifts for the whole family, and will be on hand to help you.

This event is free.

An Evening with authors Kathleen Reidy and Karen Winn

On Monday, Oct. 19, come to Book Ends for an evening with authors Kathleen Reidy and Karen Winn, as they discuss Kathleen’s latest novel, “Engineering a Love Story,” beginning at 7 p.m.

Witty and warm, “Engineering a Love Story” questions how much a smart woman can risk when she’s the only female in the room.

This event is free; registration is not required but guarantees you a seat and helps us plan accordingly. Light refreshments will be served.

An Evening with Gretchen Powell Fox

On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m., join Book Ends for a special evening with Gretchen Powel Fox to celebrate the launch of “Shadow and Son.”

Gretchen with be joined in conversation by authors Annie Paige-Stone of Sable Sorensen (“Dire Bound”) and Vasilisa Drake (“A Bargain So Bloody”).

Each ticket will include a signed copy of “Shadow and Son.”

Signed copies of all three authors’ books will be available to purchase at the event, organized by Book Ends.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 7 p.m. After the moderated discussion and audience Q&A, Gretchen will be happy to sign.

This event will take place at Hadley Hall, at the Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St. The hall is handicap accessible.

Free street parking is available on the streets surrounding the church, and there are many lots within Winchester’s town center (an approximately 10-minute walk to the venue). Winchester is also easily reached via the Winchester Center commuter rail station (Lowell Line).

Light refreshments will be served.

Gretchen Powell Fox grew up with her head in the clouds and her nose buried in books. Now she crafts fantastical stories, along with the fiery heroes destined to change them for the better. Her creative process involves sleeping fitfully and consuming copious amounts of Sour Patch Kids. You can usually find her crying when she’s happy, sad, mad, or excited; singing along to Taylor Swift; eating xiao lóng bao; or strumming her ukelele. Gretchen lives with her husband and two wild, wonderful children in northern Virginia.

Visit her online at open_in_newGretchenPowellFox.com and follow her @GretchenWritesBooks.

Cost is $40.

Wine Wednesday Class: Fall Wines

In such a polarized world, we can all agree on one thing: fall is the best time to drink wine. Between now and the holidays, with meals getting heartier and evenings getting chillier, the occasions to open a delicious bottle multiply. Come find a new favorite, explore a new style, and learn some tips and tricks to discover a new go-to bottle at your favorite store or restaurant as we inaugurate Wine Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m.

For over three years, Book Ends has hosted monthly (or twice monthly) wine classes. Now we are so excited to bring you something new -- please join us for our very first grand tasting wine party at Book Ends! This will be a cocktail party rather than a seated lecture.

We’ll have wine experts leading tasting tables throughout the store; come try 12+ wines hand-selected by Book Ends co-owner Lauren and the team at Dave’s Fresh Pasta in Somerville.

Like what you taste? You’ll be able to buy the wines from Dave’s (at a special discount!) and pick them up at the shop or have them delivered within a certain radius. Plus, you'll get to browse Book Ends while you sip! It’s the perfect chance to start your holiday shopping early — the entire bookstore will be 10% off for Grand Tasting attendees. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, as well.

Please note, this is a special THURSDAY night event, as we know you’re used to Wine Wednesdays!

Must be 21+ to attend. Advanced tickets required.

Cost is $35.
