As the Winchester High School field hockey team (10-2-2) heads into the final three games of the regular season, they understand that there’s more work to be done with the postseason looming right around the corner.

Currently, the Red & Black are the eighth seed in the MIAA Division 1 power rankings, as of Oct. 20. That alone makes them legitimate contenders for the state crown.

Coach Michelle White’s team is built on a combination of relentless defensive grit, high-caliber talent and remarkable team leadership.

The team’s defensive performance this season has been nothing short of dominant, and it all adds up to eight shutouts, while in four other games, they have limited the opposition to just one goal.

Seniors Addy Aufiero and Elsie Katz, freshman Lily Kushmerek, sophomores Sophie Mango and Liela MacLeod and first year sophomore goalie Libby Jackson anchor that defensive wall.

That defensive identity was on full display last Saturday against Middlesex League rival Reading at home on Senior Night.

It was a defensive battle by both sides, and as a result the game ended in a scoreless tie. Most of the action was locked up at midfield between the 30-yard lines. That same resilience was evident earlier in the season against host Watertown (1-1, Oct. 5), a perennial state powerhouse. They went toe-to-toe with the Raiders, but, despite the game ending in a tie, it definitely sent a clear message across Division 1 that Winchester never gives up.

But when the games demand late heroics, the Red & Black also delivered with positive results. Last week at Wilmington (1-0 win, Oct. 15), they displayed that ultimate grit.

Even though they were double- or triple-teamed, senior captains Brynn Henning and Joyce Chen still kept the pressure on the Wildcat defense, which enabled Claire McCoy to score the lone goal of the game with just 25 seconds left on the clock. The team, overall, dug deep in the final moments to secure a thrilling late game victory.

Prior to the aforementioned Reading game, the Red & Black celebrated Senior Night, a bittersweet moment that honored an outstanding class of leaders, who are going to be leaving an indelible mark on the program, both on and off the field. They include captains Addy Aufiero, Henning and Chen, along with their outstanding classmates Stella DeChristoforo, Zoe Maclin and Elsie Katz.

Among the six graduating seniors, the team’s three captains exemplify the definition of leadership and achievement. Henning, whose constant work ethic has been contagious on the turf, will be suiting up for Bates College in the fall, while Chen is ready to continue her academic and athletic journey at Middlebury College.

While their leadership has been noticeable on the field, it also shows up away from the games, where Henning and Aufiero have spent significant time going to international service trips in Latin America. On the local front, they have been involved with the unified basketball team in the spring, which fosters inclusion across the high school sports landscape.

The tradition of sending players to Assumption College will also be continuing next year, when DeChristoforo heads there to once again team up with Julia Legere.

But in the immediate future, all eyes are on the upcoming playoffs for the Winchester girls, who are perfectly poised for a long in the state tournament.

The Winchester girls were scheduled to go up against host Arlington (Oct. 20), before returning home to face non-league Uxbridge (Oct. 23, 6 p.m.) and Watertown (Oct. 26, 4:15 p.m.) to close out the regular season.
