What experiences and perspectives would you contribute to Town Meeting?
I'm a 10-year resident in a full-time working couple with 2 kids who have gone through Winchester Public Schools from kindergarten to now 7th and 9th grades. I also work in town as the Executive Director of the Network for Social Justice. In this role I interact with a lot of town stakeholders including public entities like the library and nonprofit organizations. I try to share information and connect people with similar interests and concerns.
What are two or three issues facing Winchester that you think are most important and what are your positions on them?
Affordability is an issue that makes it hard for some people to continue to live in Winchester and hard for new people to move in. I support a variety of solutions including developments and ADUs. The schools rank well, and parents who move to town for them sometimes are surprised by budget challenges and other decisions. I am in favor of using mechanisms like school improvement councils for parents to be able to contribute in constructive ways.
What is a special challenge in your precinct that might not be faced in other precincts?
In some recent elections, precinct 8 has had low participation, and it could be for a number of reasons. Our current precinct chair and members have been making more of an effort to meet together and brainstorm ways to engage more residents in our area in voting as well as participating in meetings or hearings that affect our part of town, such as development of North Main.
Why should voters elect you to represent them?
I listen attentively, to residents of our precinct and community members more broadly, and consider others' input while forming my opinion and determining how I am going to vote. I have served on Town Meeting for 6+ years and have rarely missed a meeting. If I make a commitment, it's important to me to see it through.
