Update-According to Channel 10 News, a vet determined there was no exit wound and upon performing a necropsy found a piece of stick embedded in the dog's lung.  

Dog Shot and Killed in the Town Forest

Notification from the Winchester Police Department

Yesterday, Monday evening, around 6:30pm Winchester Police received a call for a dog, shot and killed, in the town forest off Sussex Road.  On arrival police spoke with the dog owner who told police he was walking his dog off-leash heard a gunshot and found his dog shot. 

While speaking with a concerned neighbor, the dog owner reported hearing a second gunshot in the distance approximately 15-20 minutes after the original shot. 

Police were called to the scene and searched the entire area for over two hours.  Mass State Police were also called and assisted Winchester PD with a ballistic K9.  Police monitored the area overnight.

Winchester Police have been in contact with MSPCA law enforcement for assistance and Winchester Police detectives are currently processing the scene.  Police patrol and Mountain bike units will be in the area.

We ask that residents avoid the town forest while police process the scene.
