The Jenks Center has been given a $150,000 grant by the Cummings Foundation to provide services for Mandarin speakers.

Chinese residents make up 18% of town residents, many of whom are immigrants from China with little knowledge of English.

Jenks Director Phillip Beltz said the funds will be used to hire a teacher of English as a second language, and also to translate the Jenks newsletter and website into Mandarin.

“We’re also planning to have the instructor teach our staff some basic Mandarin,” he says.
