How did Winchester vote in the state primary?

With a voter turnout of 15.7%, five candidates topped their respective tickets in Winchester during the Sept. 3 primary.  

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark (MA-5), Councilor Terrance Kennedy (6th District), Middlesex Clerk of Courts Michael Sullivan and Middlesex Register of Deeds Maria Curatone, each picked up 1,987 votes across 8 precincts, including write-in and blank ballots.

Warren, however, is the only candidate to face a challenger in November.

Republicans Robert J. Antonellis, Ian Cain and John Deaton competed to go up against the two-time incumbent in November, with Deaton coming out on top, not only in Winchester, but statewide. The Republican Marine veteran picked up 392 votes locally.

Winchester delegation

How did the local state delegation do?

State Sen. Patricia Jehlen, who was first elected in 2005, received 983 votes while Winchester resident and state Sen. Jason Lewis picked up 1,004. Incumbent state Rep. Michelle Ciccolo picked up 237 votes out of two precincts while Rep. Michael Day brought in 1,750 votes.

All are running unopposed on Nov. 5.

The Libertarians had no candidates on the ballot.

Early Voting

And while a lot of votes were cast on Election Day, a total of 16,988, not all of them were cast on the actual day.

Early voting ended Friday, Aug. 30 at noon with nearly 2,000 votes cast before the polls even opened Tuesday, Sept. 3.

According to the Town Clerk’s office, 4,429 “Vote by Mail” ballots were requested and 1,860 were returned. Another 129 people voted in person during early voting.

On Tuesday, Precinct 3, which is also the largest precinct in town, had the highest voter turnout with 394 voters casting ballots out of 2,277 registered voters.
