Winchester Fast Forward Forest planting day set for Sept. 21

On Saturday, Sept. 21, join volunteers at Fast Forest for Planting Day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Wright-Locke Farm, 82 Ridge St. Rain date: Sept. 22.

The site is ready (mowed, weeded, spaded, limed, disced, tilled, twice-composted, and fenced), but there’s still a lot to do, including the following:

• Dig holes

• Plant plants

• Measure distance between plants (we have pre-measured sticks)

• Keep track of which species are adjacent

• Gather empty pots

• Sign up anyone not already signed up (paper sign-up sheets, provided)

• Tell jokes

• Sing songs

• Witness, appreciate, encourage

• Fill people’s water bottles at the barn sink

• Hand people chocolates

• Help participants put their names on the flags we’ll tie onto the safety fence

• Take pix of participants on their phones

• Keep track of tools

• Carry water for plants if it’s dry

If you are volunteering, here’s what you should wear and bring with you:

• Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

• Closed shoes or boots

• Water bottle (you can re-fill it onsite)

• Work gloves of some sort, if you have them

• Small shovel or spade if you have one, but there will be some onsite.
