Winchester News is excited to announce that it is one of the final 45 LION members participating in the LION Sustainability Audits and Funding program this year.

The final audit cycle for 2024 runs from October to December and helps independent news businesses identify obstacles to reaching sustainability and provides both an action plan and funding to help overcome said obstacles. To date, more than half of Lion’s total membership, 309 organizations, have taken part in the program.

To participate, news businesses must fill out a comprehensive survey about their organization focused on such things as operational resilience, financial health and journalistic impact. They then meet with an expert who will gather additional data and write a report or action plan tailored to that organization.

Once the participant has the action plan, they meet again with the auditor to discuss. Finally, the news business will be invited to apply for a grant for up to $20,000 to implement any or all parts of the action plan.

The program is supported by the Knight Foundation and the Google News Initiative.
