My name is Madison von Mering, and I am a Life Scout with Troop 507 in Winchester. I am also a junior at Winchester High School, a three-season varsity athlete, and am a fifth generation Winchester resident.

I am working on my Eagle Scout Service Project, Remembering Our Heroes, which is about helping the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the veterans agent for the Town of Winchester to comprise a working spreadsheet of all the veterans who are buried in Wildwood Cemetery and raise funds to replace veteran grave markers that have been stolen, broken, or were unavailable for placement previously.

There are hundreds of veterans who are buried at Wildwood Cemetery, but are not recorded as being veterans in the existing databases. My project will methodically go around the cemetery to account for all the veterans buried and collect their information (war served, position, date of birth, date of death, and any other relevant information available).

Have a story idea? Email editor@WinchesterNews.org.

In addition, I am also raising funds to help support replacing the missing grave markers, which hold flags. These are used by members of our community to remember and honor our veterans, especially on Veterans and Memorial days.

There are an estimated 2,000 veterans buried in Wildwood Cemetery. The grave markers cost $11 each and as you can imagine, I cannot do it alone. 100% of donations are tax-deductible and will go directly to purchasing the grave markers for our veterans so they are properly recognized and honored.

The public can help by donating: $11 will cover the cost of one marker, $55 will cover the cost of five markers, $110 will cover the cost of 10 markers... etc.

Residents can donate at this link.

Any amount is greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Thank you for your support and contribution to our community.
