After starting the season 0-3 in non-tournament matches, the Winchester High School wrestling team evened its record with three straight wins over Hanover (47-35, Jan. 4), Lexington (38-34, Jan. 15) and most recently Reading (49-20, Jan. 22).

Before that dominating performance against Middlesex League rival Reading, the Red & Black ran into a buzzsaw at the West Side Dual Meet Tournament in West Springfield, while missing three starters due to injury/illness. Those losses were just too much to overcome versus teams that were all highly ranked throughout the state.

However, Coach Ryan Errico still had standout individual winning performances, with the likes of Eddie Donlon recording four wins (three by pin) and Kai Napadow Baquero (two pins), Jack Allen and Ilyas Malik (three pins) leading the way. Beni Curcio, Luca Kovacev, Aiden Aharonian and Shaun Garrett were all credited with a win.

“This (tournament) was a great learning experience for the whole team, as we start gearing up for the postseason,” said Errico.

This week, the team celebrated Senior Night on Jan. 29 before the league meet against Belmont. The Red & Black will then wrap up the regular season next week with two non-league matches versus Marblehead on Feb. 4 at home, starting at 6 p.m., and Greater Lowell Tech on the road on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.

The team’s online merchandise store for all your WHS wrestling-branded needs is almost open for business. The coaches and wrestlers would like to thank Fred Fakhiri for his effort to set up the site.
