Customers at the Stop & Shop may have noticed a new device in the store recently— Marty!

The robot is designed to move through the store looking for spills and dropped objects.

Store Manager Sharn Jin said Marty rolls up and down the aisles at 9 a.m.  If he sees anything that needs to be cleaned up, his yellow lights go on and he announces “clean-up in aisle three.”

Residents have a mixed reaction to Marty.  When asked on Facebook for their reactions, a few are concerned that Marty is taking away jobs from people.

Nicki Luongo asked, “Does Marty get rid of stale bread?”

Adam Schroeder commented, “They should have a robot which will shuttle you to Trader Joe’s.”

Steve Brykman enjoys taunting the robot.

“For instance, I like to confuse it by showing it QR-codes on my phone,” he says. “There’s no law says you can’t taunt a robot!”

Guy Page says “First we have robots beeping around S&S, next we have ones that look like Arnold Schwarzenegger hunting us down...has Sarah Connor taught us nothing!?!?!”

John McConnell wrote, “Not as lovable as the robots in BJs. (They squeak, blink, and are able to avoid bumping into things.) It didn’t seem to be able to avoid hitting people.”
