Boys basketball loses tourney opener

Boston Latin (20-1, 24th seed) upset the ninth-seeded Red & Black boys basketball team (16-5) last night (Feb. 27) heartbreakingly at the WHS gym, 53-51 in a Division 1 Round of 32 state tournament game.

Girls hockey takes on Malden Catholic tonight in Sweet 16 game in Malden

The Red & Black girls hockey team (9-9-3), the 19th seed, upset host St. Mary’s of Lynn (9-12-2), the defending state champs and this year’s 19th seed, 1-0 in a Division 1 Round of 32 game on Feb. 25.

They will now play third-seeded Malden Catholic (15-2-4) tonight (Feb. 28) in a Sweet 16 game at Malden’s Valley Forum, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Lancers shutout Westford Academy (2-18-1), the 30th seed, in their Round of 32 game on Feb. 26.

Boys hockey plays Belmont in Sweet 16 game Sunday night

Winchester boys hockey (13-10), the 11th seed, defeated Shrewsbury (10-11), the 22nd seed, at Woburn’s O’Brien Rink in a Division 1 Round of 32 state tournament game on Feb. 25.

The Red & Black will now play Middlesex League rival Belmont (16-6-1), the sixth seed, in a Sweet 16 game Sunday (March 2) at Watertown’s Ryan Arena, starting at 6 p.m. The Marauders shutout Bishop Feehan (9-13-1), the 27th seed, in their Round of 32 game on Feb. 27, 6-0.

Coach Gino Khachadourian’s team hopes the third time is a charm after it lost both regular season games to Belmont by scores of 4-1 (Jan. 4) and 3-1 (Jan. 31).
