When Maureen Conway and Mai Harrison were asked to be the chairs of this year’s En Ka Fair, they readily agreed.

Harrison says, “Every year En Ka asks for chairs and I’ve always wanted to help bring joy to the town. Plus, it works for my schedule.”

The Arlington Street mother of three high school students, wanted Winchester News to be sure to let readers know that the fair hours are different this year.

“Instead of 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, it’s going to start at 4, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  A better schedule for fair-goers and volunteers,” she says.

Conway’s been an En Ka member for six years.

“I thought chairing would be overwhelming, but Mai asked me, and I agreed. The fair is 90 years old this year,” she adds. “At this point, it’s a well-oiled machine, the volunteers know what to do in each area.”

The chairs get to choose the theme — this year it’s “The Best Memories are Made at the En Ka Fair.”

Conway says members are always grateful for the clean-up crew. Not only the Department of Public Works employees, but also the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Harrison says, “One of the nice things we’re proud of is how much community help we get — we always need more volunteers. Friends and family help, Rotary members, National Honor Society students, and ABC students help. Some of the art class students do the face-painting, for instance.”

Conway adds that each year they write a letter to the businesses, “The fair interrupts their business and takes up parking spaces, but they’re so nice about it.”
