The Winchester High School boys lacrosse team (11-4) is in the state tournament, and is also among the Top 10 Division 1 clubs, seeded eighth overall, according to the May 13 power rankings.

When the next rankings come out, the Red & Black just might be even closer to the top after they defeated host Lexington (6-8, 22nd seed), 16-5, hours after the aforementioned polls were released by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).

Coach Phil Reuland’s team closed out last week with a 13-4 road victory over Burlington on May 8. The win officially clinched a berth in the postseason.

Junior Ryan Martin paced the offensive attack against the Red Devils with five goals. Senior captain Adam Rauseo made 15 saves in net to do his part to help secure the win.

“We have a lot of players injured, and so some younger, less-experienced players had to step up recently,” said Reuland. “In particular, sophomore defenseman Ben Wright and his classmate Dylan Martin, a midfielder, have been solid stepping into starting roles.”

Against Lexington, Martin scored another five goals to help pace the offensive attack, along with Ted Budreski, who also netted five. Budreski, a junior attack, was credited with one assist, as well. Freshman Griffin Budreski was next in line with two goals.

Reuland also praised the goaltending contributions of Rauseo.

“We continue to get excellent goaltending from him,” the coach said, of the senior captain.

Lincoln-Sudbury (11-2), Boston College High (14-1), St. John's Prep (14-1), Andover (9-2), Acton-Boxborough (11-3), Concord-Carlisle (12-1) and Westford Academy (10-3) were ahead of the Winchester boys in the power rankings earlier in the week. But with four regular season games left on the schedule, these current seedings are certainly subject to change. There are 44 teams in Division 1 statewide.

The Red & Black is scheduled to play host to non-league Longmeadow Friday (May 16), starting at 4:30 p.m. They will then begin the final week of the regular season at Reading on Monday (May 19, 4:30 p.m.), before returning home to go up against Belmont (May 21, 4:30 p.m.) and Andover (May 25, 5 p.m.).
