Despite the unseasonably cold, rainy weather that hovered over the state this week, high school spring sports teams were scrambling to wrap up the regular season, before the state tournament pairings are announced for baseball, softball and lacrosse next Wednesday, May 28.
The preliminary round games will then begin two days later on May 30.
The tennis brackets were announced May 23, and the Winchester girls (15-3) will first be playing King Philip Regional (11-9), the 25th seed, in the Round of 32, while the boys (15-4) take on Boston Latin (6-9), the 23rd seed, also in the same round. Dates and times for both matches TBD. The volleyball teams will see who they will be playing in the postseason on May 27.
Coach Ed McDonald’s baseball team split its final two games this week to complete the regular season with a 12-8 record. The Red & Black lost to Belmont on May 20, 7-6. But they reversed that score against non-league Lawrence the next day.
As of May 23, the Winchester boys are ranked 32nd in the Division 1 power rankings. There are 60 teams altogether in this division. They are now prepping for the tournament, hoping to go as far as they can and well into June.
The Winchester High School softball team (7-12) is the 44th seed in Division 1, according to the May 23 power rankings. This division is comprised of 55 teams. This week, Coach Jason Capodanno’s squad edged Belmont on Tuesday, 6-5, but lost to host Reading the next day, 17-4. They still have one more game left to their season, and it’s scheduled for Monday, May 26, against visiting Somerville, starting at 4 p.m.

Coach Suzanne Ontso’s girls lacrosse team (8-10) finished up its season this week against Reading (17-3 loss, May 19) and Belmont (9-5 loss, May 21). As of the May 23 Division 1 power rankings, they are in the state tournament as the 28th seed. The Top 32 teams automatically make the postseason. They are 47 teams in this division.
The boys lacrosse team, coached by Phil Reuland, is 12-6 with one more regular season game still left to be played on May 23 at home against non-league Andover. The Red & Black has already played two games this week against Reading (13-9 loss, May 19) and Belmont (15-12 win, May 21). As of May 23, they are seeded 10th in the Division 1 power rankings. There are 44 teams in this division.
Coach Michael Lauretano’s boys tennis team, who’s now getting ready to face aforementioned Boston Latin in the postseason opener (date and time TBD), wrapped up the regular season with a 15-4 record after splitting their two matches this week against Belmont (5-0 win, May 19) and non-league BC High (3-2 loss, May 20). They are the 10th seed in the Division 1 power rankings, according to the final poll. A total of 53 teams are in Division 1.
Coach Greg Lowder’s girls tennis team (15-3) won its last two matches of the regular season against Reading (5-0, May 16) and Belmont (4-1, May 19). The Red & Black, the eighth seed, will now be taking on aforementioned King Philip Regional to kickoff the postseason. The actual date and time have yet to be finalized.
As of the May 23 power rankings, the Winchester boys volleyball team (14-6) is the 16th seed in Division 1.
Coach John Fleming’s squad wrapped up the regular season this week with two wins against Belmont (3-0, May 19) and non-league Cambridge (3-1, May 22), but lost a close match to non-league Acton-Boxborough, 3-2 on May 20.
