Amrita Mondal does classical Indian dance and she’s using her connections in the dance world to raise money for The Bridge Recovery Center which helps folks affected by a substance abuse disorder.

The 16-year-old Winchester High School rising junior is coordinating an Indian dance and music charity festival in August.

“We talked about substance abuse in school,” she says, “so I contacted Souls of India and we’re collaborating on the event.

“I’ve danced for other charities, including the Bengalees of New England and the Prabasi of New England,” she continues. “My parents really boosted my confidence — my mom inspired be to take lessons and connect to my Indian heritage. I’m taking lessons at the Triveni School of Dance in Brookline. But the performance isn’t just for an Indian-American audience, it’s for everyone.”

Mondal says she’s still “just a novice, but I’m learning a lot from Souls of India.”

The performance will be based on the Hindu goddess Durga.

“She’s the head goddess,” says Mondal, “and our dances will relate to Hindu mythology stories.”

When asked if she’s considering becoming a professional dancer, Mondal answered, “I’m interesting in going into a STEM career, perhaps biology.”
