On April 11, Winchester High School hosted the Massachusetts History Day State Competition, with students from across the Commonwealth showcasing their documentaries, exhibits, papers, websites, podcasts and performances centered on the theme “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.”
Cassandra Fisher & Penelope Howes received an Honorable Mention award in the Group Documentary category for their project “The Walter E. Fernald Development Center: Systematic Abuse in the Name of Care.”
The top two finalists in each category earned the right to represent Massachusetts at the National History Day competition in College Park, MD, from June 14-18.

The following WHS students were recognized as finalists and will be advancing to the National competition:
• Andy Chan & Phoebe Li in Group Documentary for “Rights vs. Rule: Governing a New Digital Cyberspace.”
• Kaylee Guo & Claire Lin in Group Website for “The Thalidomide Tragedy: How a Medical Disaster Led to the Transformation of Modern Drug Regulation and Consumer Protection.”
• Chenning Zhang in Individual Documentary for “Xiaogang Village Experiment The Quiet Revolution that prompted China’s Rural Reform.”
• Grace Bartlett & Raka Mukherjee were finalists in the Group Podcast category for their project “China’s One Child Policy.” However, because this was the pilot year for this category, there will not be a competition at the national level.
In addition, Mike Lee received his award as this year’s Massachusetts History Day High School Teacher of the Year for his commitment to authentic research, his collaborative approach with his colleagues and, most importantly, the guidance he provides his students throughout the History Day project development process.

Congratulations to all of the students who competed and were recognized for their work, as well as to Lee, Dr. Scott Spencer and Adam Weiss for all of the support they provided their students throughout the year.
Thanks, as well, to Adam Hiscock for pulling double duty and keeping everything in order, James Waddell for providing tech support, the Class of 2028 for selling concessions and the number of sophomore students and NHS members who helped with set up, take down and everything in between to make things run smoothly.
Please take a minute to congratulate the students and their teachers on their wonderful accomplishments!
