The Winchester High girls soccer team opened up the 2026 home season with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting Stoneham on Sept. 9.
A couple of Red & Black seniors led the way with one goal apiece. Senior Amelia Holmes netted the second goal of the season from senior captain Emma Kiernan after sophomore Audrey Houllahan put one home from her classmate Elise Alvares.
Kiernan closed out the offense with a goal that was set up by senior captain Sophie Shapiro with 20 minutes left in the game.
The Winchester girls led at halftime, 2-0, while also controlling possession throughout the majority of the game, but the Stoneham goalie kept it from getting out of hand.
“She was really locked-in to keep out all but three of our 36 shots,” Coach Michelle Ross said of the opposing goalie.
At the other end of the pitch, the Spartans managed just one shot on the Winchester net, which occurred in the second half. As a result, senior goalie Amelia Burke and her junior backup Kendall McCarthy combined to record the team’s first shutout of the year.
The Winchester girls then hit the road for Woburn to begin a brand-new week on Sept. 15, where the winning continued against the Tanners to the tune of 5-1. It was followed by a trip to Boxford to face non-league Masco on Sept. 17.
The team will complete the week away from home with a Saturday night prime time game on Sept. 19 against league rival Lexington, beginning at 6 p.m. After a few days off, they will be at Melrose on Sept. 23 (4:15 p.m.), before finally returning to Knowlton for another Saturday night showdown on Sept. 26, this time against non-league Natick, starting at 6 p.m.
