Winchester residents and visitors will now have a new way to learn about the town’s rich history, thanks to the installation of a new Winchester History sign next to Town Hall.
The new sign replaces the previous sign, which had deteriorated over time, and features updated historical content and a fresh, beautiful design. Its installation was truly a community-wide effort, bringing together the town, local historians, artists, and volunteers.
The Winchester Historical Society Board, led by President Electra Govoni, initiated the project. Hilda Wong-Doo, a Historical Society Board member, served as project manager, coordinating the many people and organizations involved in bringing the new sign to completion.
A huge thank you goes to Michelle Prior, the entire Select Board, and the Winchester Cultural Council for their sponsorship and support of the project.
Special appreciation also goes to Patty Mihelich and Catherine Harrington-Mahon of the Town Manager’s Office for their coordination and assistance throughout the process.
The updated historical content was developed through the diligent work of Ellen Knight, Nancy Schrock, Susan Keats, and Bradford Adams, ensuring that the sign reflects Winchester’s history in an engaging and informative way.
The beautiful new design was created by Cynthia Randall, visual arts director at Arts Winchester, whose artistic vision gives the sign a fresh and welcoming presence beside Town Hall.
Finally, sincere thanks go to the Department of Public Works, led by Bob LaBossiere, for de-installing the old sign and installing the new one.
The completed sign is a wonderful example of what can happen when community organizations, town officials, volunteers, historians, artists, and municipal staff work together toward a shared goal. We hope residents and visitors will enjoy the new sign and take a moment to explore and appreciate Winchester’s history.
