Winchester celebrates Chinese New Year: Year of the Snake

Happy New Year! If you’re looking at your calendar and scratching your head, that’s because it’s Chinese New Year.

Lunar New Year 2025 started Jan. 29 and lasts 16 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival on Feb. 12.

On Feb. 2, Winchester’s Asian/Chinese American community came together on Feb. 2 at Winchester High School to celebrate the holiday.

The packed event was hosted by the Winchester School of Chinese Culture (WSCC) and the Chinese American Network of Winchester (CAN-Win).

Chinese New Year also marks the transition of the zodiac, leaving behind the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. The wood snake to be more precise.

The snake is a symbol of growth and change, shedding its skin. People born in the Year of the Snake are known for their quick thinking and problem-solving skills.
