It’s official. Winchester News has received its nonprofit status.

For the past 16 months, Winchester News has been able to receive tax deductible donations through its fiscal sponsor, the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN).

The donations were received by INN as an established 501(c)(3) to be held for Winchester News. INN would then grant the organization funds pursuant to requests to cover expenses. INN would charge a fee for their services and Winchester News would need to stay in compliance as if it was already a nonprofit.

After reaching its one year anniversary, Winchester News decided to file for its own tax exempt status. After a three month wait, Winchester News received a letter from the IRS granting it nonprofit status as a public charity pursuant to Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and IRC Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi).

The determination is valid going back to the inception of the Winchester News Group, Inc. on April 19, 2023.

Donors can continue to contribute as described on the Winchester News donations page during the transition away from its fiscal sponsor, INN. Winchester News will update the page with new instructions as soon as the relationship has ended, which should take at least 60 days.

At that point, all online donations will likely go directly to the Winchester News account and all checks should be made payable to the Winchester News Group, Inc. and mailed or delivered directly to our treasurer at 109 Wendell St.
