The holiday season is finally behind us, and it’s time to resume the normal activities that consume our everyday lives.

For the Winchester High School winter sports teams, this week began their first full week of games since the calendar flipped to 2025.

The Winchester High School boys basketball team (5-1) maintained its winning ways as the calendar flipped to 2025 after beating Middlesex League rival Woburn Jan. 3, 68-42.

Jack Charchaflian was the Red & Black’s star of the game against the Tanners with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Alex Casey contributed 19 points to the winning cause, while Carson Sarpong grabbed 10 rebounds.

“I think our defense once again set the tone for the game in the first quarter (Winchester led after one, 17-8),” said coach John Fleming. “We were able to jump out in front and carried that momentum throughout the rest of the game.

“Jack and Alex led the way offensively, but we had so many others who contributed to this win,” added Fleming. “For the first time this year, we had all 14 players healthy and dressed for the game. They all played at least a few minutes, plus 10 out of the 14 players scored in this game. This was definitely a good team win.

“Anytime you beat your league rival, it is always a good thing,” added Fleming after the Woburn game.

Red & Black girls hockey ends 2024 with .500 record

The Red & Black girls hockey team, coached by Tommy Scarpa, ended its 2024 portion of the schedule with a 2-2-1 record. The team also had several scrimmages that led up to the start of the regular season schedule. During that exhibition slate, they edged both Lincoln-Sudbury, 2-1, and the Peabody co-op, 5-4, before tying the Haverhill co-op, 1-1.

It was then time for the opener against Longmeadow, a team that’s supposed to contend for the state title, according to the Hockey Night in Boston preseason polls. But the Winchester girls weren’t intimidated, coming away with a 2-1 victory on Dec. 16.

June McCabe netted both the goals. Josie Chang, Julia Leger and Claire Zhang chipped in with the assists.

Two days later, the Red & Black squared off against the Stoneham / Wilmington co-op, and came away with a resounding 7-1 triumph over the Spartans.

Single goals were scored by Ashley Goodrich (first varsity goal), Madeleine Jones (first varsity goal), Chloe Goldberg, Josie Chang and Ellie Parks. Senior Lulu Murphy paced the offensive attack with two goals. Goalie Claire Zhang was in net for both wins.

Since then, the Winchester girls dropped a 3-2 decision to Melrose on Dec. 21, before tying non-league Andover a week later, 3-3. They closed out 2024 with a close 4-3 loss to non-league Methuen on Dec. 30.
