The first of Art in August’s 2024 “meet the artist” receptions takes place on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Commonwealth Real Estate, 39 Church St., with Wendy Jo New, maker of contemporary jewelry, and Susan Whitten-Clark, creator of textile art.
Then on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Winchester architecture and interior design studios of Leslie Saul and Associates, 611 Main St., get ready to meet artist Jui-Lan “Juily” Su, who spent more than 30 years in biomedical research after earning a masters degree in entomology before she started out acrylic painting in representational style. Now her artwork includes mixed media, modern and abstract in styles.
Wendy Jo New
New produces fine contemporary jewelry and other metal designs primarily in the precious metals of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. These are often further defined with the addition of texturing, gemstones and other unique lapidary, or resin inlay.
Her work has been described as “Clean. Crisp. Geometric. Architectural. Subtle elegance.” She finds designing and fabricating engagement and wedding bands and other jewelry, often with people’s own stones, particularly meaningful.
Susan Whitten-Clark
Whitten-Clark is a longtime Winchester resident and active member in the art community. She is showing some of her recent fabric collage and quilts, which feature ombre and hand painted batik fabrics.
Jui-Lan ‘Juily’ Su
Su’s love of gardening, museum-going and blind contour drawing are the bases for many of her paintings: paintings on flowers and gardens were inspired by her own garden.
Su’s recent mixed media “The hanging garden” was inspired by Suzanne Jackson’s “In Nature’s Way” at the Whitney Biennial 2024.
Art in August events are free to the public and refreshments are served; come to look or to buy!
