Winchester Unitarian Society kicks off its 20th annual concert series on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m., with a delightful evening of vocal music ranging from opera and oratorio to musical theater, jazz and art song.
Works will be performed by sopranos Cailin Smith and Kirsten Hart, tenor Brendan Buckley, and baritone Rob Woodin, accompanied by pianist John Kramer.
The concert will be held in the Winchester Unitarian Society sanctuary, 478 Main St., Winchester. It will also be live-streamed.
The concert opens with an ensemble performance of “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” [“Let’s drink from the joyous cups”], the celebrated drinking song from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata. The program then turns to solo and duet performances of a range of works, including the lovely “Flower Duet” from Léo Delibes’ Lakmé; “Comfort Ye” and “Ev’ry Valley” from Handel’s Messiah; “Whither Must I Wander,” from Ralph Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel; “A Little Priest,” from Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd; “Lily’s Eyes,” from the musical The Secret Garden; “Maybe This Time,” from the film Cabaret; the hilarious “The Song That Goes Like This,” from the musical Spamelot, and much more.
The concert concludes with an ensemble performance of the powerful and moving “Seasons of Love,” from the Broadway musical “Rent.”
The four soloists have performed with opera theater companies and orchestras in the Boston area and beyond. All are educators and professional vocalists with the Winchester Unitarian Society Adult Choir. Pianist John Kramer is music director at Winchester Unitarian Society and is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music.
Suggested donations at the door are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for students. The venue is handicapped accessible, and street parking is available.
