Families with children in grades K–5 are invited to participate in a free Bike Rodeo during Winchester Town Day on Saturday, June 6, at Winchester High School.

The event is being organized by volunteers from Walk & Roll Winchester and the Climate Action Advisory Committee in partnership with the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The goal is to help young riders build confidence on their bikes while learning important safety skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants will bring their own bicycles and helmets and take part in guided sessions led by trained Safe Routes to School instructors. Each session includes a bike safety review and a hands-on skills course where children can practice balance, signaling, stopping, turning, obstacle avoidance, and other essential riding skills.

The Bike Rodeo is designed for children who already know how to ride a bicycle. A parent or guardian must be present for elementary school participants. Children are also required to wear a helmet and closed-toe shoes.

The course is based on the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Bicycle Rodeo program, which helps students develop safe biking habits and learn the rules of the road through interactive activities. Riders may encounter challenges such as turtle races, obstacle courses, zig-zag turns, shoulder checks, and a miniature “Safetyville” street network that simulates real-world riding situations.

Four 50-minute sessions will be offered between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Participation is free, but registration is required. Each session is limited to approximately 25 children to ensure a high-quality experience.

The Bike Rodeo is part of the broader Walk & Roll Winchester initiative, a volunteer-led effort that encourages safe walking, biking, and active transportation for students and families throughout the community.

By helping children develop confidence and safety skills, organizers hope to make it easier for more families to choose walking and biking for local trips, school commutes, and recreation.

“We are excited to bring this program to Winchester during Town Day,” said Damien Thiery, a volunteer with Walk & Roll Winchester and the Climate Action Advisory Committee. “It is a fun way for children to improve their bike skills while helping families think about active and safe transportation in our community.”

The event will take place in the Winchester High School parking lot and is open to all Winchester families with children in grades K–5.
