Amid growing attention to state and local politics, Mystic Valley Voters announces its inaugural forum on Tuesday, July 7 at 6 p.m. in the Bonsignore Room of the Medford Public Library, 111 High St., Medford.

The forum will spotlight the hotly contested 2nd Middlesex state Senate Democratic primary, where five popular candidates vie for the seat of retiring Sen. Pat Jehlen, making it the most crowded state Legislature primary in the Commonwealth.

The forum will serve as only the second time the majority of candidates have come together for a candidate-focused event outside of the city Democratic caucuses, following the Cambridge Committee for Transparency and Accountability’s forum on June 16.

Organizers hope that the forum will serve as a window for residents to see where candidates stand on key issues, such as  affordability, racial disparity, Palestine in local policies, immigration, and digital security, with an opportunity for the public to ask questions through a Q&A afterwards.

Candidates in Attendance:

  • Burhan Azeem, vice-mayor of Cambridge
  • Erika Uyterhoeven, state representative, 27th Middlesex District (Somerville)
  • Christine Barber, state representative, 34th Middlesex District (Somerville and Medford)
  • Matt McLaughlin, city councilor, Somerville Ward 1
  • Winchester resident Tom Hopcroft is not attending the event.

The Mystic Valley Voters Forum is a collaboration of Medford community members from a variety of civic organizations based in and around the city of Medford, including Safe Medford, Mystic Mashup Indivisible, Medford for Palestine, and Our Revolution Medford.
