Winchester firefighters responded to a report of an incident with smoke at the former Meineke property on Main Street early Thursday afternoon, according to witness accounts.

Emergency vehicles arrived at the scene shortly after 1 p.m., witnesses said. One witness reported seeing smoke, though no visible flames were seen from the street. Police directed pedestrians away from the area as crews responded.

Officials had not released details about the cause or extent of the incident as of Thursday afternoon. It was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries or damage to the structure.

The property, at 972 Main St. at the corner of Glenwood Avenue, has been identified in town planning records as a former automobile service site. More recently, it was rented by a landscaper and has been the subject of redevelopment plans.

The Winchester News contacted the Fire Department, and a staff member told a reporter to call back in about an hour for more information.
