State Rep. Michael S. Day, D-Stoneham and Winchester, will serve as the House chairman for the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Judiciary after his nomination from House Speaker Ronald Mariano and unanimous confirmation by his caucus colleagues.

The Judiciary Committee, which dates to the establishment of the Legislature itself, is responsible for handling the Legislature’s most sensitive and legally complicated matters and has jurisdiction over matters ranging from criminal justice to oversight over the Commonwealth’s court system to reproductive issues and civil rights.

“I am honored by Speaker Mariano’s nomination and the faith my colleagues have placed in me to lead the Judiciary Committee,” said Day. “The work we undertake this session will be important as we deal with a wildly unpredictable federal government and continue to strive to make Massachusetts the safest, healthiest and most educated state in the country. I am eager to work with my colleagues and the residents of Stoneham and Winchester towards that end.”

Last term, Day led the effort to successfully pass scores of landmark bills covering a variety of issues including a comprehensive update of state firearm safety laws, landmark protections for domestic violence survivors, extending full rights of parentage to LGBTQ+ families and a review of policies that will curb waste from excess packaging materials used in all products.

His colleagues also elected him to serve on the Legislature’s Joint Special Committee on Initiative Petitions which made recommendations on the five ballot questions put to voters in statewide elections held in November 2024.
