Select Board Update
The Select Board has recently taken up an engineering update on MS4 permitting and Davidson Park, a review of parking and transfer station rates, and committee appointments (please check the Town website for open roles). Upcoming discussions will focus on long-term capital planning and budget approaches.
The Board held a goal-setting session on June 1 at Wright-Locke Farm with members of the Town Manager’s team and will continue discussions throughout June before moving to a lighter summer cadence.
Information on a feedback survey and focus groups on the March election will be available soon.
Thanks to EnKa for a successful EnKa Fair, the VFW for the Memorial Day observance, and the Town Day Committee for this weekend's Town Day. Congratulations to Citizen of the Year Rich Mucci and Business of the Year recipient Nowell & Son. —Anthea Brady, Chair, Select Board
School Committee News
As School Committee members and WPS leadership continue implementing the FY27 "bridge" budget approved by Town Meeting, discussion of increased athletic fees for the 2026–27 school year (necessitated by the failed override and a sports program deficit) has been a recent focus, with a vote to finalize fees anticipated at our June 11 meeting.
WPS is also celebrating the many accomplishments of our students, especially WHS's Class of 2026. From PK-12, families have come together to celebrate several events that showcase the diversity and spirit of Winchester, including Kindergarten orientation, our elementary schools' beloved international nights, and concerts like Strawberry Pops and A Night of Jazz. —Timothy Matthews, Chair, School Committee
Field Management Update
The Field Management Committee (FMC) continues to build strong partnerships with field user groups. Focus areas include scheduling and permitting, Community Preservation Act awareness, and collaborative efforts to improve and maintain fields. We welcome the new youth football effort.
Nick Cacciolfi, Michael Creane, and Lauren Herrmann are developing a guidebook of Winchester playgrounds.
The FMC has collaborated with Town Manager Chris Senior on the Ginn Field renovation to ensure it meets Winchester and conservation requirements. We have also managed the replacement of backstops and fencing on town fields and supported the removal of magnet/metal fragments and cleaning of turf surfaces.
Our next open meeting is June 3. —Michael Creane, Chair, FMC
Tree Committee Defines Three-Year Priorities
During its May 15 meeting, the seven-member Permanent Street Tree Committee (PSTC) defined its three-year priorities as we work to maintain and improve the town’s tree canopy. Working with neighboring towns, we are identifying cost-saving opportunities for tree planning, planting, and maintenance. We have a near-term focus on Winchester’s parks and streetscapes and will also begin to expand resources for residents who want to learn about and/or plant trees. We welcome participation from anyone who values the many benefits of our town’s trees—reach out at afwhit@gmail.com to be added to our associate member list. —Austin Whitman, Chair, PSTC
The Role of the Design Review Committee
The Design Review Committee (DRC) advises the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board on all proposed construction or demolition projects that require Site Plan Review or a Special Permit. We also review sign permit applications and other design-related issues for the Town as needed. —Adrian LeBuffe, Chair, DRC
