The following was submitted by Christine Barber:
State Rep. Christine Barber announced the endorsement of a coalition of Winchester leaders in her campaign for state Senate in the 2nd Middlesex District, including state Sen. Jason Lewis, state Rep. Michael Day, and Winchester activist Eve Coffey.
The endorsements span Winchester’s representation on Beacon Hill. Lewis, whose district includes part of Winchester, is the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Education and a Winchester resident.
Day represents most of Winchester in the House and chairs the Joint Committee on the Judiciary.
Coffey is a Winchester activist and pro-democracy organizer.
“When we passed the Student Opportunity Act, the most significant investment in our public schools in a generation, Christine Barber was one of the House members I could count on, fighting for the funding and pushing to make sure those dollars reached the students who need them most. That’s who she is on every issue: prepared, persistent, and focused on results. Winchester and this whole district deserve a senator who can deliver from day one, and Christine Barber is that senator,” said Lewis.
“Christine Barber is a trusted partner in government who knows the difference between governing and campaigning. Having had the opportunity to work closely with Christine on everything from reproductive rights to police and criminal justice reform, I know firsthand how hard and how successfully she works to build trust, foster relationships, and get results, not just sound bites. I’ve admired her dedication to her constituents and hope to continue to work with her as my state senator,” said Day.
“I believe democracy is strongest when people actively stand up and advocate for it. That is precisely what Christine Barber does. She authored the Dignity Not Deportations bill to protect immigrant families from federal overreach.
Throughout her career, she has consistently defended the rights that this administration is attempting to strip away. Winchester needs a senator who will stand firm and fight for these values, and that is Christine. I am proud to
support her,” said Coffey, a Winchester activist.
“Winchester will never be an afterthought when I’m in the state Senate,” said Barber. “I’m honored to have the support of the leaders Winchester trusts: Senator Lewis, Representative Day, Eve Coffey, and community leaders across our town. They know my record because they've worked alongside me, and they know I’ll show up for Winchester’s schools, seniors, and families. I don’t just share this community’s values. I deliver on them.”
Barber is running in the Sept. 1 Democratic primary for the 2nd Middlesex State Senate seat, which includes Somerville, Medford, and parts of Cambridge and Winchester.
She has passed laws eliminating copays for insulin and inhalers, allowing all Massachusetts residents to apply for a driver's license regardless of immigration status, and requiring employers to post salary ranges, and she has secured millions of dollars in local investments across the district.
